The member-run cultural centre Dar el Fan was active between 1967 and 1975. It was founded by Janine Rubeiz and committed to the advancement of culture. Its art exhibitions positioned Dar el Fan as a tastemaker shaping artistic standards of its time. The centre also showed avant-garde films, held conferences and lectures among many other activities.
Contrary to a wide-held perception, many exhibitions took place in Lebanon during the 1980s, a decade marked by the Lebanese civil war. The end of the decade also saw some major exhibitions of Lebanese art in London and Paris.
The early 1970s saw the peak of galleries established in Beirut up to then. With the outbreak of war in April 1975, most galleries closed. While some reopened in 1977, new ones were established in both Beirut and especially the coastal towns north of Beirut, such as Kaslik.
Art critic Joseph Tarrab covered Lebanon’s exhibition scene between the late 1960s and early 2000s, giving insights into individual artistic practices as well as broader questions related to Lebanon’s art world.
